Medical Malpractice Carriers

Most medical malpractice carriers have seen a huge increase in their premiums over the last several years. There are two different theories about why the costs have gone up so much for healthcare professionals that purchase this type of insurance. Many people continue to point the finger at the insurance companies, but this is not just the insurance companies wanting to see a bigger profit.

More About Increasing Prices for Medical Malpractice Carriers

When we say medical malpractice carriers we are referring to those that purchase, or carry this type of coverage with them, in other words the doctors who need this insurance coverage. Doctors have been seeing huge increases, in some cases as much as a 50% increase in their premiums from what they were paying just a few years ago.

Many people believe that the increase in cost to the medical malpractice carriers has been in response to more claims being filed. While there may be a slight increase from year to year, this cannot be the only factor affecting the overall cost of the coverage. In fact, some studies have shown that the number of claims has actually declined in recent years and only in the most recent past have numbers started to climb a little more, though the prices of the coverage has been increasingly from year to year.

The other school of thought on why the cost to medical malpractice carriers has gone up so much is because the damages that are being paid out are much more significant than they have been in the past. This may be true, to a certain extent, yet even though many jurisdictions have passed laws putting caps on damages, the prices continue to go up.

The fact of the matter is that the cost to insure doctors is more expensive. While there are caps on some damages there aren’t on others, and so there really is not a balance there. It has been said that the insurance premiums that are paid on an annual basis are less than 10 billion dollars while the payouts from insurance companies are in the 10 to 20 billion dollar range. When you look at it in this way, it suddenly becomes clear why the cost of coverage has increased for medical malpractice carrier. The cost of covering doctors is simply being passed down from the insurance company to the people who carry their coverage.
